Mallorca | Spain 2010
Exploring Mallorca’s sun-soaked streets, ancient history, and delicious local flavors made for an unforgettable Spanish escape.
The next stop on our Spanish adventure was the beautiful island of Mallorca. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort in Palma Nova, perched right along the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The resort offered stunning views and a charming boardwalk that ran along the shore, perfect for morning strolls and sunset walks.
We quickly set out to explore Palma, the island’s historic capital. The old city captivated us immediately with its winding streets, Gothic architecture, and centuries-old charm. We wandered past the imposing Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma (La Seu), an architectural masterpiece begun in the 13th century and a symbol of Mallorca’s rich history, though unfortunately it was closed during our visit. Nearby, we toured the Arab Baths (Banys Àrabs), a rare remnant of the island’s Moorish past, and marveled at the fact that we were literally walking on floors and walls that were over 1,000 years old—a humbling connection to history.
The old city revealed countless treasures in every corner. In one of the plazas, we came across an ancient olive tree, a living witness to centuries of Mallorcan life. We also discovered the tiniest charcuterie shop imaginable—so small that it was nearly impossible to turn around inside—but it was overflowing with flavors and local delicacies.
Of course, no visit to Mallorca would be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. We toasted to the Mediterranean life with Cava, enjoying its crisp bubbles as we soaked in the atmosphere of the streets. We also sampled ensaimadas, the island’s famous sweet, spiral-shaped pastries, light and delicate, a true taste of Mallorcan tradition.
Every moment on the island—from wandering historic streets to tasting local treats—was infused with the warmth of Spanish culture. The combination of Mediterranean beauty, centuries of history, and rich gastronomy made Mallorca a magical chapter in our journey. We left the island enchanted and eager to discover even more of Spain’s treasures in the future.
